This is not your average chemistry class! We cover the chemistry of hazardous materials with live demonstrations, hands-on activities, and lots of comprehensive chemical identification exercises using a variety of air monitoring and sample identification equipment including pH paper, fluoride paper, oxidizer paper, multi-gas instruments, PIDs, flame photometers, mass spectrometers, Raman spectrometers and FTIR spectrometers. Each hands-on identification exercise includes dispatch information requiring the students to use the instrument information to make strategic and tactical decisions in order to properly handle the incident. Students will get hands-on experience with over three dozen different chemicals during the week.
The class covers:
Risk Based Response
Air Monitoring
Sample Identification
Chemical & Physical Properties
The Periodic Table
Salts & Non-Salts
