Hazardous Materials Technician for Emergency Responders
(80 hr)

Hazardous materials incidents are all too common in this technological day and age. We offer a state of the art hazmat technician class that is fully compliant with OSHA 1910.120 and NFPA 472. This class is an intensive program to prepare first responders to handle a wide range of hazardous materials incidents, from small incidental spills through large incidents involving multiple chemicals and/or large quantities such as tanker emergencies. The course also prepares students for low probability/high risk incidents such as terrorist attacks involving weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

A wide range of topics is covered in this class. The course is based upon a classroom foundation, but centers on hand-on-training. Skills are reinforced at numerous local fixed site facility visits. By the end of the class, members will have participated in over half a dozen scenarios, most at actual facilities that use hazardous materials.

The intended audience for the hazmat technician level class is emergency response personnel, especially firefighters that already have Firefighter I & II and Hazmat Operations certification. Law enforcement and EMS personnel are also strongly encouraged to attend, especially if they work closely with, or are part of a hazardous materials response team. Law enforcement and EMS personnel that have had minimal hazardous materials training are encouraged to take “Hazmat Operations for EMS” or “Hazmat Operations for Law Enforcement” prior to enrolling in the technician level program.
