Law enforcement
is usually first on the scene of 911 calls. In this day and age
of global terrorism you never know what you're going to get! This
program is designed specifically for law enforcement officers and
is designed to cover signs of possible terrorist activity as well
as recognizing more common hazardous materials incidents such as
motor vehicle accidents, industrial accidents, and clandestine drug
labs. The program stresses the importance of recognizing the hazardous
materials incident, especially when it masquerades as a "routine"
run, and acting appropriately. Hazard analysis, hot zone determination
and isolation are critical to a safe response.
The
use of the Department of Transportation's Emergency Response Guide
(2004 ERG) is emphasized. The new LANX personal protective suits
used by special response teams are examined. Quick and appropriate
action at a hazardous materials release by law enforcement can prevent
injuries, property damage and environmental contamination. Defensive
operations that can change the outcome of the incident such as diking
and diverting are addressed.
